European Nightcrawlers Eisenia hortensis These Nightcrawlers are quickly becoming quite popular in the United States. European Nightcrawlers average 1 1/2 - 2 1/4" in length and they are the diameter of an old wooden matchstick. They are a warm weather worm that does not require refrigeration but they can tolerate temperature extremes better than Canadian Nightcrawlers. They are excellent for pan fishing and trout and are the best composting worms. Worms will multiply in 2-3 months in most compost piles. The European nightcrawler, Eisenia hortensis or Dendrobaena veneta, is a medium-small earthworm averaging about 1.5 grams each when fully grown. Generally blueish, pink-grey (cf. Latin veneta meaning "sea-blue") in color with a banded or striped appearance. The tip of the tail is often cream or pale yellow.
